How does the expense splitting algorithm work?
Each expense is split equally among all group members. The tool tracks how much each person has paid vs. their fair share. It then uses a greedy algorithm to calculate the minimal number of settlement payments β so instead of everyone paying everyone, you get the fewest transfers needed to balance all debts.
Is my expense data saved securely?
Yes β all data is stored locally in your browser's localStorage. Nothing is sent to any server. Your expense data persists between visits, so you can close the page and come back later. Use the "Reset All Data" button to clear everything when your trip is over.
Can I split expenses unevenly?
Currently, all expenses are split equally among all group members. If someone didn't participate in a particular expense, you can adjust by adding a separate entry for just those members or splitting the difference manually. Future updates may include custom split options.
What types of expenses can I log?
You can log any shared travel expense β hotel stays, restaurant meals, taxi fares, museum tickets, groceries, tours, or anything else. Simply enter a descriptive title, the amount in your preferred currency, and who paid for it.
How many people can I add to the group?
There's no limit! Add as many group members as needed. The settlement algorithm efficiently handles any group size. Three default members (Alex, Taylor, Jordan) are pre-loaded for easy testing β you can remove them and add your own names.
