Our Methodology & Data Sources
Transparency is at the heart of our estimates. Here's exactly how we calculate travel costs.
How We Calculate Travel Costs
Our calculator uses a multi-layered approach to estimate daily travel costs. Each destination's budget is broken down into four core categories:
π¨ Accommodation
Hotels, hostels, Airbnb alternatives based on travel style tier (Budget/Standard/Luxury)
π½οΈ Food & Dining
Street food, local restaurants, fine dining β weighted by local cost of living
π Local Transport
Public transit, taxis, ride-shares β based on city infrastructure data
π Entertainment
Attractions, tours, activities β regional averages for cultural and outdoor experiences
Each category is calculated using regional cost multipliers derived from economic data. For example, Western European cities use a multiplier of 1.3β1.5Γ the global average, while Southeast Asian destinations use 0.3β0.5Γ. These multipliers are then applied to base costs for each travel style tier.

Limitations & Disclaimer
Estimates, not guarantees: Our figures represent statistical averages and should be used as planning guides, not definitive budgets.
Seasonal variance: Costs can fluctuate 20β40% between peak and off-peak seasons. Our baseline estimates reflect annual averages.
Currency fluctuations: Exchange rates change daily. We use periodically updated rates, but real-time conversion may differ.
City vs. country: Costs within a single country can vary significantly (e.g., rural Indonesia vs. Bali, or rural France vs. Paris).
Update frequency: We review and update our cost data annually, with interim adjustments for significant economic changes like inflation spikes or currency devaluations.
